iOS 9 on iPhone 6: First Impressions & Performance

The iPhone 6 iOS 9 update is here and it brings a ton of changes to Apple’s former 4.7-inch flagship. We’ve been using the official iPhone 6 iOS 9 release for several hours now and we want to provide you with some feedback about its performance so far.

In June, Apple confirmed an iOS 9 release for several devices including the iPhone 6, the flagship that arrived alongside the iPhone 6 Plus last year. The iOS 9 update represents the iPhone 6’s first major iOS update and it follows in the footsteps of Apple’s iOS 8.4.1 update.

The iOS 9 update brings several new features including a News application and a revamped version of the popular Notes app. It also brings several enhancements including a supposed hour long boost to the iPhone’s battery life.

It’s a big update for the iPhone 6 and it’s an update that many users have their eyes on as we push away from the iOS 9 release.

Like a good guinea pig, I downloaded the iPhone 6 iOS 9 update right when it was released. And per usual. I want to supply you with some initial feedback about the update’s performance in the hours after the initial roll out.

These initial iPhone 6 iOS 9 update impressions don’t serve as a final review but they should help those of you who are struggling over the decision to install now or wait a few hours or even a few days. Remember, there are some very valid reasons to wait.

iOS 9 Installation

I love and loathe iOS release day. Love it because of all the new features and all of the potential. Loathe it because there are always problems. iOS updates also have a tendency to hurt performance rather than help it so I’m always leery ahead of release.

At 10:01AM PT, Apple released the iPhone 6 iOS 9 update. And right on cue I, like many others, ran into download issues. I don’t like iTunes and typically avoid it at all costs. So, I download all of my updates Over-the-Air.
                              iOS-9

The iOS 9 OTA update failed to download on my iPhone 6. I fired up iTunes and managed to get iOS 9 downloaded on my iPhone 5 but I decided to wait and see how long it would take me to get it on board the iPhone 6. Self-torture, perhaps.

After about 30 minutes, the error message went away and I was able to download the iPhone 6 iOS 9 update. I was expecting more download problems but none came my way. I was able to get the 1GB (!) file downloaded and installed in about 15 minutes. That has to be a record for a major iOS update.

Download problems have continued to emerge in the aftermath of the update. If your download is showing long download times, wait a little bit or try changing connections. If your iOS 9 download gets stuck, hold down the home button and power button to get it unstuck.

Apple customers complain of apps crashing with latest iPhone, iPad software

In what appears to be a repeat of last year's problems, some customers say the update to Apple's mobile software, iOS 9, has caused apps to shut down.

Apple's new iPhone and iPad software comes with better battery life and a new Siri interface. It might also come with bugs.

Apple customers are reporting on Twitter and other online forums that apps on their mobile devices are crashing when they update the operating system to iOS 9. iOS 9, the latest version of Apple's software for iPhones and iPads, rolled out to consumers on Wednesday.

"iOS 9 was cool, but now all my apps keep crashing so now I hate it," tweeted Isaac Miltimore.

The problems bring back memories of Apple's iOS 8 update last year, which caused certain devices to experience buggy Wi-Fi and decreased battery life. Subsequent updates to fix the software ended up creating their own problems. These problems aren't rare -- Apple pulled its WatchOS update for its Watch because a bug, and issues often arise with the introduction of new software.

"The big picture here though is that this is the standard environment for a new operating system launch," said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. "There are always going to be a spectrum of bugs but they should be solved within a few days."

Since Apple's official iOS 9 launch, the adoption rate of the new operating system is a little more than 20 percent, according to Mixpanel, a third-party mobile analytics firm. So far, the latest version is being adopted at a faster rate than previous operating systems.

Munster expects numbers to keep growing despite the reported bugs, which would allow the Cupertino, Calif., company to solve them more quickly. "Apple can't get an OS to be stable until they have the full force of their base using it," he said, noting that any glitches are likely the result of the combination of apps and hardware on users' phones. As users send diagnostic information back to Apple after downloading the iOS 9 upgrade, Apple will be better able to fix the bugs.

Yet customers didn't hesitate voicing their grievances. Here are a few more related tweets:

"This iOS 9 update... App crashing and ugly fonts." --@stephayson

"Y'all updated to iOS 9 for the extra hour of battery but you'll regret it when it starts getting laggy and crashing" --@Nycphoria_186

"Outlook app is crashing after iOS 9 update. Had to uninstall and reinstall the app to get it to work again." --@bananza

"Does anyone else have apps that keep crashing after you got IOS 9???" --@emm_zeddis

At least one complaint reference battery life, but it's unclear whether that's been a bug associated with the update.

iOS 9 incorporates changes that make iPhones and iPads more able to predict an owner's needs and interests. For example, based on user habits, a device can load up music selections ahead of a regular morning runs, or automatically suggest apps. iOS 9 also improves battery life and gives the Siri voice assistant a new interface, allowing it to remind a user of appointments without being told to ahead of time.

Apple declined to comment for this report.
